The illusion of oil revenues

Having an economic system which is independent of oil exportation revenues has always been an interesting slogan for all candidates of all elections in Iran. It is an agreed-on ideal for all economists and almost all individuals in our society. I think the starting point to reach this ideal is getting our mind free of the illusion of oil exportation revenues. Most of ordinary people in our society think that if these revenues were spent in the best way, many of social problems, such as unemployment, inefficiency of social security system and residential problems, would be automatically solved. To some extent I agree that resource allocation process is not an efficient one in our government but it can still be mathematically proved that this cash is not sufficient for solving even one of these problems. To free your mind from this illusion track the following calculations:

According to Associated France Press (http://afp. google.com/ article/ALeqM5jD WcfUDJFD6dkArtBf 7VVXXq6zyA) “Iran’s income from oil and gas exports topped 81 billion dollars in the year to March”. We should consider that this is the highest revenue in the history of Iran’s oil industry. The exploitation and exploration and maintenance costs which are almost 5% of this revenue should be deducted to reach the gross profit. So we can consider this revenue to be almost 75 billion American dollars. Considering the exchange rate of 900T for each dollar our revenue from oil exportation will be something around 67500 billion Tomans. Assuming that nothing from this money is spent for military, security, or development projects (which is far from reality), Deviding this huge number to the population of our beloved country will give us share of each Iranian from this seemingly huge number. (67500000000000/ 70000000= 964286 Tomans Yearly or 964286/12=80357 Tomans Monthly). You should also consider the fact that this has been a very special situation and when I am writing these our oil exportation revenues has halved. This is our share from oil and gas!!!!

If you think this is not a small amount, you should notice that between March 2007 and March 2008 government was paying (700 Tomans/Litre *100 Litres/ month=) 70000 Tomans per month for subsidizing each car’s gas.

It is also interesting to know that UAE have almost same revenue as us from oil exportation while the population of original citizens of this country is almost 1.4% of ours (According to CIA Factbook). So their share of this revenue is 70 times more than ours.

At the end of this discussion I want to state the fact that “WE ARE NOT A REACH NATION IN TERM OF NATURAL RESOURCES.” However I believe that our natural resources (Specially our human resources) are sufficient to help us in our development process if they are used EFFECTYIVELY and EFFICIENTLY. It seems that each nation’s wealth is dependent on the alive creatures which are living in it rather than undergrounded fossils of creatures which have died millions of years ago. I am dreaming for the time that we are able to explore and exploit the first type of natural resources
